ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute's Regional Station at Minicoy deployed the first fish aggregating device to ensure the livelihood security of the tribal fisher community on Minicoy islands. The FAD consists of a nylon rope bow shackle, thin polyester webbing sling, galvanized swivel FRP buoy, and concrete block anchor. FAD is a floating device that attracts pelagic tuna species through a succession of attracting devices, increasing fish productivity and reducing searching time during fishing operations.
With the continuous persuasion and effort of the team under the leadership of Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair the FAD was anchored at the open ocean, of distance, 10.5 nautical miles from the shore (Lat: 80 26’ 0.7.38” N and long. 73011’ 0.32 E) along with the Department of Fisheries, today. The tribal fisheries of Minicoy, UT, Lakshadweep are implementing measures to ensure fish availability, reduce fuel consumption, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance vessel safety.
The team of ICAR-CIARI, RS Minicoy, with the staff of the Department of Fisheries and the fishermen accompanied to the location during the deployment on the said date.
