ICAR-CITH Empowers Ladakh Farmers with Cutting-Edge Horticultural Technologies

ICAR–Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture, Srinagar has licensed four breakthrough technologies to six progressive nursery growers of Kargil, UT of Ladakh through formal MoUs. These innovations include advanced grafting and budding techniques in walnut, high throughput apple clonal rootstock multiplication, feathered apple nursery plant production, and improved propagation methods for stone fruits such as apricot and peach.

This initiative addresses the critical shortage of quality planting material in Ladakh, where limited nurseries and skills have constrained expansion of temperate fruit cultivation. The licensed technologies will:

•Ensure reliable production of high quality planting material in apple, walnut, apricot, and peach.
•Promote high density apple orchards through rootstock multiplication and feathered plant development.
•Achieve >80% success in walnut propagation, boosting improved variety adoption.
•Enhance survival and propagation rates in stone fruits, strengthening apricot and peach cultivation.

By enabling local production, Ladakh farmers will gain timely access to planting material despite seasonal road closures, while also opening opportunities for export to other regions. This step is expected to significantly enhance farmer incomes, strengthen Ladakh’s horticultural economy, and position the region as a hub for premium temperate fruit planting material.
