ICAR–Central Tuber Crops Research Institute, Sreekariyam, organised a field demonstration on soil health management in wetland ecosystems at Naruvamoodu, Pallichal Block, Thiruvananthapuram district, Keralam, today, under Khet Bachao Abhiyaan Rabi 2026. The programme was conducted in an area identified as a hotspot for cassava stem and root rot, a disease associated with adverse soil conditions.

The demonstration aimed to sensitise farmers to the importance of soil health management in reducing the incidence of cassava stem and root rot, particularly in wetland fields characterised by poor drainage, prolonged soil moisture retention and imbalanced nutrient application.

During the programme, the symptoms and progression of the disease were explained, highlighting how necrosis begins in the collar region below the soil surface and subsequently spreads to the roots and storage tubers. The importance of proper drainage, improved soil aeration and balanced nutrient management in maintaining crop health was emphasised.

Farmers were also sensitised to the importance of soil testing before fertiliser application to assess nutrient status and determine crop-specific nutrient requirements. The discussions covered the balanced and timely application of primary nutrients—nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium—along with secondary nutrients and micronutrients. The limitations of indiscriminate complex fertiliser use without considering soil nutrient status and crop requirements were highlighted. The benefits of incorporating quality organic manures and fertilisers to improve soil structure, fertility and beneficial microbial activity were also discussed.

During the interactive session, farmers highlighted practical challenges, including limited access to soil testing facilities, delays in receiving soil test results and the limited availability of individual fertilisers. These constraints often compel farmers to rely on complex fertilisers that may not adequately meet the specific nutrient requirements of different crops. Farmers also raised concerns regarding the availability and quality of organic fertilisers.

The programme underscored the need for accessible soil testing services, timely and crop-specific fertiliser recommendations, and a reliable supply of quality organic inputs to promote sustainable soil health and nutrient management in wetland ecosystems.

A total of 24 farmers, including 21 men and 3 women, participated in the programme.
