ICAR-NIVEDI Hosts AMR Stewardship Drive 2025 to Strengthen Collaborative Response to Antimicrobial Resistance

ICAR–National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics, in collaboration with the CII Food and Agriculture Centre of Excellence (FACE) and the Indian Federation of Animal Health Companies (INFAH), organized the AMR Stewardship Drive 2025 under the theme “Building Partnerships for Strengthening Our Response to AMR today at ICAR-NIVEDI.

The event was inaugurated by distinguished guests including Shri Suresh Chitturi, Chairman, CII Animal Agriculture Committee; Dr. Shirish Nigam, President, INFAH; Prof. (Dr.) P.K. Shukla, President, Indian Poultry Science Association; and Dr. Sindura Ganapathi, Visiting PSA Fellow, Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India.

Shri Suresh Chitturi warned of rising antimicrobial usage in Indian livestock production projected to increase by 312% by 2030 and stressed the impact on food systems and public health.

Dr. Shirish Nigam outlined the goals of the AMR Stewardship Drive as a multi-city initiative to raise awareness, build grassroots capacity, and encourage responsible antimicrobial use across sectors.

Dr. Sindura Ganapathi urged for tailored, sector-specific solutions to AMR, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

In his keynote address, Dr. Baldev R. Gulati, Director, ICAR-NIVEDI, highlighted the urgent need for a multi-stakeholder approach to tackle AMR in food animals. He underscored the importance of rational antimicrobial use, surveillance, and capacity building under India’s National and emerging State Action Plans on AMR, aligning with the One Health framework.

Participants included representatives from institutions such as ICAR-IVRI, ICAR-NDRI, NIANP, KVAFSU, NCBS, IAH&VB, and Veterinary Colleges in Bengaluru and Shivamogga, alongside leading livestock and poultry industry stakeholders including Venkateshwara Hatcheries, Alltech, Godrej Foods, EW Nutrition, Natural Remedies, and others.

A CII report titled “Industry-led AMR Stewardship in Animal Agriculture” was also released, emphasizing the private sector’s role in combating AMR.

A technical session, featured expert presentations on diverse strategies to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Topics included the role of ethnoveterinary medicine in AMR containment, the importance of responsible antibiotic use and proper record-keeping in livestock management, and insights from ongoing surveillance programmes monitoring key AMR pathogens such as MRSA, ESBL-producing E. coli, and carbapenem-resistant bacteria in livestock.

The AMR Stewardship Drive 2025 served as a dynamic platform for dialogue, collaboration, and capacity building reinforcing the collective responsibility to address AMR and safeguard the sustainability of India’s animal agriculture sector.

The event brought together over 120 participants from research institutions, academia, industry, and regulatory bodies.
